Madrid

Madrid is the capital city of Spain in the heart of the country. It is the largest and most populous city in the country and it is also the second largest city in the European Union, and is home to the World Tourism Organization. This endearing and energetic city mixes modernism and history that never ceases to intertwine on every street corner, discovering an abundance of small neighborhoods each more beautiful than the other. Thanks to its quality of life, its architecture, its cultural offer, its gastronomy and especially its sunny climate all year round, Madrid attracts more and more travelers who come to discover the capital for a weekend or more. Madrid is a cosmopolitan city that combines the most modern infrastructures and its condition as an economic, financial, administrative and service center, with an immense cultural and artistic heritage and a legacy of several centuries of exciting history. The people of Madrid are open and friendly to others. It is also known that everyone can be a real "madrileño" without even being born in Madrid !

In addition to the exceptional scientific quality of each ICPP, we should rejoice at this opportunity to join Madrid. The people of Madrid are open and friendly to visitors and knowing Madrid means walking its streets. It is the city offering the most intense nightlife in Europe where you can go from tapas bars to night clubs until 6 am every night and day. For a less hectic evening, you have the choice between very good restaurants, dozens of theatres, cinemas and flamenco theatres. If you are a sportsman, go and see the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, home of the "best football team of the 20th century", Real Madrid CF.

During the month of July you will have the opportunity to visit the 38th edition of the Veranos de la Villa festival in Madrid which will animate the summer of the city thanks to a host of cultural and leisure activities, many of which will be free. The program is rich in music, theatre, circus, cinema, fashion, dance, contemporary art, comics and gastronomy, welcoming artists and projects from all five continents throughout the city. To discover the richness of the local gastronomy, it is essential to visit the authentic markets of the city, where  meeting and tasting locations allow you to have a drink, taste the fresh products like Spanish ham or fishes caught the same day. Two addresses: the Mercado San Miguel, not far from the Plaza Mayor, and the Mercado de San Anton, in the Chueca district.

In terms of culture, you can sit quietly and admire the art that surrounds this city. The famous “Guernica” work of Picasso, considered one of the most important of the 20th century, is preserved in the Reina Sofia Museum and transcends this event to become a tribute to all the victims of the massacres, of all wars. Emotion guaranteed.
Madrid is also home to one of the most beautiful museums in the world, the Prado. You will discover the works of European painters from the 14th to the 19th century, collected by the Habsburgs and the Bourbons.

It is difficult to get to Madrid without attending a flamenco show, the traditional Spanish folk dance. The tablaos (stages) and bars have maintained this tradition and offer the possibility to contemplate ‘flamenco’ every evening in all its purity, while enjoying a dinner or having a drink.

On the terraces of restaurants and cafes, we can drink and eat the famous tapas, bocadillos, croquetas tortillas, squid sandwich, and churros. Enjoying a mild temperature almost all year round, Madrid people live outside and come home late. The largest, liveliest and probably one of the oldest squares, dating from the 16th century, the Plaza Mayor, is a must.

Finally, to get around Madrid, several means of transport are available : the bus, the metro or the taxi, and there are also the Cercanías which are suburban trains of Madrid that connect different points of the city and serve the main communes of Madrid and the surrounding provinces. Also, the Madrid City Tour which offers convertible buses that allow you to get on and off as many times as desired. These buses travel the most interesting places in the city while offering commentary along the way.
