Visa requirements & application
http://www.travelchinaguide.com/embassy/visa.htm

You can request an L (tourist) visa or an F (business) visa which require the following documentation:

1) Applicants for an L (tourist) visa need to provide copies of a round trip airline ticket and proof of a hotel reservation (which we will send you if you book through the meeting).

2) Applicants for an F (business) visa need an official invitation letter from the conference “host”, Jiangsu University.

There is no problem sending participants an official letter but this is often complicated and time consuming due to bureaucracy, both in the sending of the letter and in the approval process by the Chinese officials.

If you feel you absolutely need an official invitation letter for the visa, please note that this must include not only your name (exactly as it appears on the passport) and gender but also your date of birth.

Electrical plugs and sockets
China runs on 220 volts with a variety of plug types. Most common are the 2 prong straight plug (USA style) and 3 prong angled (Australia style).

Most consumer electronics will be rated at 100 to 220 volts, read the details on your appliance's power supply. Generally cameras, phones and computers may need an adapter to fit in the plug but not a power converter.

If you have 3 prong USA style plugs you will need an adapter. You can pick up a cheap power strip in China which accepts most any plug in the world.

If your appliance is not rated for 220 volts, such as a hair dryer using 110 volts, do not plug it in or you will ruin it! Most hotels have hair dryers or will loan you one.
